[Nantonaku News] The GakiBlog Hiatus

Hello anyone reading this,

Invis here, current main translator for the Nantonaku Translations division, translating technically 5 different UF blogs (Gaki, Sayu, Aika, Fuku, Honey). But as of late things have gotten harder to juggle and so a change had to be made.

tl:dr Gaki blog fan-translations will be going on hiatus as I figure out what to do with things. We’ll be trying something new soon. For details See below (or click the article if you’re on the front page)

So what happened was life problems slowed me down, as they do. But what I saw was staggering to my motivation. This last update of blogs had 8 Sayu, 8 Honey, 10 Fukuchan, and a WHOOPING 27 Gaki blogs built up during my break. 27!

In actuality though the amount of translation that would actually require is probably less than the 18 from FukuBo combined. The reality of the problem is that the overhead on formatting and additional issue eat into the production more than the content itself.

See the current process for how I run things is pretty…overexcessive. I could change but it’s really how I like to play the game really. A blog comes out, as soon as I can I load it up, save all the images and page content and take a screenshot of the entire page for emergency archival purposes (If I have a net outtage, or need to be away from the net or power outtage while I have a laptop,etc.). I then use some magic of mine to get the content transferred to a document where I can easy write over Japanese with English while maintaining placeholders where images and emoji go on the page. This means technically speaking 1 long blog post is less work for me 5 small ones.

This is only part one of the process though, since the magic I use tends to also have to keep track of any special formatting that is used on the entry so that I can maintain the formatting as close as possible. That’s one of the reasons I don’t do Ma-chan blogs in all honesty, she changes colors, sizes, and boldness so often it starts to add more work to it all. Imagine if you had to write an essay but you have to keep moving positions among other passages that aren’t yours, and you had to make those passages in the right position and displayed the same way. It starts to get more troublesome the more something isn’t just typing out paragraphs.

Lately GakiBlogs have unfortunately gotten more technical in that matter. She centers every entry, which isn’t so bad, but she also uses a formatting that almost randomly bolds and unbolds every letter, if I tried to standardize it I run the risk of it overcompensating and me having to do more work line by line checking if formatting is consistent. So I found myself not willing to try to simply it because it risked upholding a similar formatting that I find so important to the style we do here. There’s also videos that I never translate because I don’t trust my ear for the kind of accuracy that it sometimes requires.

“But Invis” you might say, “Isn’t putting up low quality better than nothing?” And you might be right, so we’ll be trying something new (more on that later), but I couldn’t have GakiBlogs put here in the same way as they always had in a lower quality while Sayu, Fuku, and Haruna are given better treatment just because they format simpler than Gaki does. It felt unfair. At the same time with the time it takes for me to catch up sometimes I end up so exhausted I immediately end up with a backlog again. Plus with the blog translations as they are I find it hard to find time for other potential things I could do or even being able to watch shows and performances from these girls I’m translating. It’s seriously becoming an issue now. I had thought about adding Kudu- things at one point because her doing Toku work, another of my interests, is a wonderful thing, but I didn’t have the time or power. At his very moment another GakiBlog just went up so 28! lol.

So it is with much reluctance that I have decided that the blogs for now need a hiatus. I still love Gaki for what she does. Her blogs most of the time are fun, have funny pictures, or stories that are great. She’s recently started doing video clips which are lovely, and she’s still the beautiful woman with the personality I adore. But at the moment I cannot keep up with her in the way that I would feel justifies “blog fan-translations” that we do.

So what are we gonna do? Well the plan is what I call “Project Birdy” and that’s because like it sounds, it’s gonna be a twitter movement.
What I plan to do is what I currently do for Sayu blogs on twitter. If a blog comes up while I’m attentive, or has important content, I’ll link to it on twitter and summarize the content.
Because I won’t be translating them in full content or style it saves me the overhead but it still gives you as a potential reader a chance to know what Gaki is up to. Now because of how twitter works and things I probably won’t tweet every update, but you’ll get a sense of what is going on still and I’ll try to make sure it’s worth it.

We’ll see how the people on twitter think too, because if it’s maybe too much we can adjust or find a new way, but this gives me more time and you less wait, especially if you like more than just Gaki.

So what do you think? Maybe you wanna take the mantle of Gaki blog while I’m on break? Let me know what’s going on for you and this idea below!

thanks for your time,
InvisNantoka
